A Study on the Status of Child Abuse in Gyeongsangbukdo Province

Abstract
Purpose£ºThe purpose of this study is to present the basic data for prevention from child abuse by investigating the status of child abuse in Gyeongsangbukdo area for last 5 years with the needs for child abuse protection and early detection of victims.

Method£ºAmong the 934 cases filed to Gyeongsangbukdo Child Protection Center, 505 child abuse cases, fall into the child abuse screening measure criterion, were investigated from January 1st, 2002 to December 31st, 2006.

Results£ºAmong the victims, there were 52.08% of male and 47.92% of female, and 59.60% of them were aged between 8 and 15 years. Most commonly, 25.74% of victims were neglected. Of the characteristics of victims, mental retardation was 70.59% in disabilities and kleptomania was 16.20% in behavioral disorders. Among the perpetrators, there were 69.90% of male and 29.90% of female, and 80.39% of them were aged between 30 to 40 years. Most commonly, 80.99% of perpetrators were their own parents. Of the characteristics of perpetrators, 29.84% showed inadequacy in child supporting knowledges, abilities and proper manners.

Conclusion£ºThe child abuse commonly occurs by their own parents. Noticing that most perpetrators have inadequate knowledges, abilities and proper manners in child support, educating sufficient child caring strategies for both parents would be essential.
